Wareham seems to have changed interests in historical eras. We have seen WW1, WW2, early and late Victorian, and now the English Civil War. In this case seafaring in the Caribbean. The Red Man series covers the same era in England. It will be interesting to see how Wareham develops these series as he covers both action and societal background. "No Peace Beyond the Line" is set shortly after the Bishops Wars mid seventeenth century initially in coastal England, later in the Caribbean, particularly Barbados. This novel is the latest in a long series of historical novels by the prolific Wareham, and, we are told, is the first of a series: "Buccaneers."The novel consists mostly of technical details of naval construction and warfare with some details of the chaotic internecine religious and political struggles during the reign of Charles I.There are a few historical personages included, chiefly, Henry Hawley, Governor of Barbados, and several important fictional characters: Jemmy (Nipper) Dawes and Jim (Gunner) Gurney.This novel is interesting chiefly in its details. Its character development and plot is just barely sufficient to carry one though to the conclusion.
